Lighting a handmade candle is much more than a simple gesture: it's a ritual.
Each flame reveals the craftsmanship, the patience of the pouring process, and the subtlety of the fragrances. Yet, a few common mistakes can diminish its beauty, its burning quality, and its lifespan. Here are our tips to help you fully enjoy your Siwa Candles.
1. Cutting the strand too short… or leaving it too long
A wick that is too short will prevent the wax from melting properly, while a wick that is too long will produce a flame that is too strong, rapid combustion and sometimes soot.
👉 Our tip: before each lighting, trim the wick to about 5 mm . This ensures a stable and clean flame.
2. Extinguishing the candle too soon
The initial combustion is crucial. If you extinguish it before the surface is completely melted, a "pit" may form around the wick.
👉 Leave your candle burning until the entire surface is liquid (approximately 2 to 3 hours depending on the size). This will ensure an even melt and prolong its lifespan.
3. Place it in a draft
A simple breath of air can cause the flame to flicker, result in uneven burning, or cause the wax to run to one side.
👉 Place your candle away from windows, fans or open doors for a steady, smoke-free flame.
4. Letting the candle burn for too long
Even though the atmosphere is magical, it is not recommended to leave a candle burning for more than 4 hours at a time . The wax becomes too hot, which can damage the wick or the container.
👉 Turn it off gently , let the wax cool, then turn it back on later.
5. Neglecting maintenance between uses
Burnt wick residue or dust impairs the quality of the flame.
👉 Remove the debris and check that the surface is clean before relighting your candle.
6. Extinguish the candle by blowing hard
Blowing creates smoke, moves the wax and can blacken the pot.
👉 Use a wick snuffer or gently dip the wick into the melted wax using a small tool, then straighten it: this prevents smoke and prolongs the life of the wick.
7. Discard the jar once the candle is finished
At Siwa Candles, each concrete pot is a durable, handcrafted piece .
👉 Once your candle has burned out, clean the pot with hot water and reuse it : as a small planter, pencil holder, or Siwa refill.
In summary
Taking care of your candle prolongs its shine and honors the work of the craftsman.
With these few simple steps, your Siwa candle will offer you a perfect burn, a harmonious fragrance and that soft light that transforms every moment.
